One year on etsy

My etsy shop turns one today! Happy etsy-birthday to me!

In celebration of my first year, use discount code BRturns1 for 15% off my etsy shop until 14th April!

Now that we’ve celebrated, on to an honest look at my first year on etsy…

Sales: 61

If I’m completely truthful, I was hoping for more sales in my first year. I’m really pleased to be getting a steady order per week, but at this rate, it’ll never really be a success. I’m hoping that adding art prints to my shop will increase sales next year and I’m planning on redoing my product photography in the next few weeks to freshen up the shop!

If you have any suggestions for items you’d like to see in my shop, please let me know!

This sounds like quite a lot, but averages out to less than 4 of my shop items being viewed a day! I really need to work on advertising and marketing my shop. I feel like I’m constantly talking about my shop, but looking at my social media, I don’t seem to mention it very much!

Would it annoy you to see more marketing from me about my shop?

Best seller: Christmas card pack

Without a doubt, my Christmas card pack has been my top seller. I tried to get ahead of the game and started to design them in Summer, only to decide I didn’t really like them in Autumn, and then had to start from scratch (whilst moving house!). This year I’m hoping to be more organised, but no promises!

Next best seller: Otterly adorable card

After the Christmas cards, my otterly adorable card has proved most popular. I think it’s been a keen boyfriend/girlfriend favourite!

Worst seller: Cakeday cards

I love my Happy Cakeday birthday cards, but it seems I’m in a party of one! Oh well, you can’t win them all!

All in all, I’m so pleased I opened my etsy shop. I was so naive to begin with, thinking that all I would need to do is pop a few cards in the shop and then the sales would come rolling in – I was so wrong! It’s an endless process of self promotion, tweaking, creating new ideas and this is on top of the illustration, editing and artworking…

So, my first year has not quite gone as well as I had hoped, but I’ve learned a lot and now I know how much work it’ll take to build on these sales. On the bright side, 61 sales is far better than 6, so it’s a great starting point for year 2!

Back to the office

This week I’ve been back at my old office, which was my home from home for the last four years until I handed in my notice this summer.

It was such a daunting prospect handing in my notice and deciding to strike out on my own. I didn’t have any projects lined up and I had no real back up plan in place, but I knew that if I didn’t go for it now, I never would.

7 weeks on from my last day working with them and I’m back in the office working as a freelancer rather than a full time member of the team. It’s still early days yet, but it definitely feels like I did the right thing!

I spent the last 6 weeks working at a different agency, which was a huge learning curve. As quite a shy person, suddenly I was surrounded by people I didn’t know and in a sprawling office that I did not know my way around – in sum, it wasn’t the ideal situation for me, but if I was going to go freelance I knew I had to get used to starting out somewhere new.

The first few days were especially awkward, I’d gone from running the office to not knowing where the meeting rooms were or how to use the printer, which I ended up avoiding for all 6 weeks! Also, I am the worst at striking up conversation with people I don’t know, but luckily the people I was working with were so friendly, chatty and helpful, so I was let off the hook and I soon felt comfortable, if not quite at home there.

So this week, I’ve been back in familiar surroundings, but everything is ever so slightly different. Firstly, I’m at a new desk and there are new people in the team, but it’s more than that, the everyday discussions about the office don’t apply to me anymore, I don’t have a stake in any of the decisions or outcomes.

It took a little getting used to, but then I realised, this was exactly what I was looking for when I handed in my notice in back in summer. I’m now officially an events producer, not an events producer slash office manager, not an events producer slash IT help desk, not an events producer slash web manager. Just an events producer.

So now, when I’m not in the office, doing my events producing, I can focus all my energies on other things, such as building this blog, improving my illustrations one drawing at a time and spending more time at home with my family.

I think 2015 will be an exciting year :)

To celebrate not having to dream about my perfect job any longer, I decided to focus on what I have at the moment, so rather than my dream work wardrobe, here’s a quick illustration of what I actually wore on my first day back in the office – I told you I’m a jeans and jumper kind of girl!

365 days pain free

It’s now been a year since my Grandad passed away.

So to mark the day, I want to celebrate his 365 days pain free.

I’m not sure if there is a heaven, but if there is, he’s had 365 days up there enjoying what he loves best and rubbing shoulders with the best of them.

He encouraged us to aim high and not settle for less than we deserve, so hopefully we’ve all taken that to heart.

He had over 78 years full of life and I can only hope that I can match him with as many good stories to tell in my lifetime.

Busy little worker bee

For the last couple of weeks I’ve struggled to find time to post; work has been busier, I’ve been spending more time with the family and of course, the kittens!

So, I definitely think I can be forgiven for my lack of posts – who wouldn’t want to spend their evenings snuggling, cuddling and playing with tiny little kittens?! They are two weeks old today, Happy Birthday Kittens, and they are more fun everyday!

They’ve all got their eyes open now and they are so close to being able to walk properly, although they still drag themselves along on their bellies, with their little legs kicking out behind them – its the most adorable thing ever and I’m having to hold myself back from posting every photo and video I take – this kind of cuteness needs to be shared!

Who can resist this much adorable-ness?

So when I’m not following my kittens around with my camera phone, then I’m at work and every day seems to be getting busier and busier! This project is throwing up all kinds of curveballs!

So while I’m at work being super busy and efficient and important (of course), then I’d like you to imagine that I look the part too, so hopefully, something a bit like this:

work wardrobe 2

I would love an acid green bag and shiny blue shoes! However, if you read my previous post on my dream work wardrobe  then you’ll know you are far more likely to find me in jeans, boots and a jumper… One day I’ll have lots of lovely work clothes!

So that’s me set for this week – snuggling with wiggly kittens and dreaming of a classier work wardrobe… oh well, at least it meant I was wearing flats for my walk from the station seeing as I accidentally took the boyf’s keys with me to London today – oops!

I hope your week is also filled with kittens!

Week 18 – A new year, new hopes and dreams

Week 18 of 2014 was my last week of being 25 years old. As of today it’s a brand new year for me, full of new opportunities, new hopes and dreams and new starts.

This year I want to …

  • spend more time with my family
  • spend more time with the boyf
  • improve my art and illustration
  • spend some time in the sun
  • go on a picnic
  • reconnect with old friends
  • fill my blog with illustrations I can be proud of
  • worry less
  • host a bbq in our garden
  • take more photos
  • get out and meet new people
  • start looking for a house to buy with the boyf
  • go on a long walk in the countryside
  • ensure I’m in a job I love
  • start letting the cat out at night
  • send friends and family postcards, just because
  • pay more love and attention to the degus
  • spend a day at the beach
  • put one of my paintings on the wall
  • sing Christmas songs all through December
  • create an iPad case from one of my paintings
  • kiss the boyf at midnight on new years eve
  • visit somewhere I’ve never been before
  • go on a bike ride
  • make a snowman
  • paint a tote bag
  • focus more on today rather than tomorrow

Rather than an illustration to celebrate my year, I thought a little montage of pics would be best! (I realise this is cheating my 52 project slightly, but it’s my birthday, so I can break the rules!)

It’s a year for big dreams and little goals. What are you hoping for this year?

Betbet and Joe

I did a sneak peek on this a few weeks ago on facebook and although it’ll never be perfect, I think I’m ready to share my little illlu of me and the boyf.

betbet&joe

It’s so difficult to be completely happy with it, especially when I know the subject matter so well, but I’m happy to accept that I’m still learning.

So I can think of this illu as a marker for my art skills to date, and in the future I can try to do an even better one. Then, one day, I’ll be as good as I want to be.

It’s all about me!

When I first set up this blog I knew for sure that I didn’t want any photos of me splashed across the about page.

I felt that including a picture of me would take something away from the site – it would be less Bethany Robyn, and more, just me: Bethany, Beth, Betbet (take your pick, I answer to all three).

However, the more posts I add, the more I feel that I need to add a little more of me to the pages, after all, the first thing I look at when visiting a new site is their about page. I want to know who’s writing and why they are writing.

So I give in, I’m adding a bit more of me to my about page and adding a picture (it’s there now if you want to have a peek at the updated page). But, I haven’t abandoned my original plan completely; this is still a photo-free zone.

So… this is me:

about me

Obviously, I’ve taken a bit of artistic licence… I can only dream that one day my hair will take on the colours of autumn leaves and I will spend my days reading books as I lean casually against a tree! And, I am still a little hopeless at capturing people’s facial features, but let’s just gloss over that slightly!
