Yeay, new cards!

Woo hoo, finally, I’ve added some new cards in my etsy shop!

This week, I’m adding 9 new cards to the shop, with another 12 to be added next week!

On top of that, in order to make room for all this new stock, I’ve put some older cards on sale, as well as adding some multi buy options to the shop, all of which can be found in my special offers section!

Ooooh, and I redid all of my product photography – it’s all change!

So, without further ado, here are the new cards launching this week:

Tune in next week for the next etsy update :)

The month of nothing going to plan!

I had so many plans for April!

I would develop some new card designs, I’d start selling art prints and I’d update the whole of my etsy shop with new, bright and colourful photography.

As I’m sure you have guessed by now, as always, nothing has quite gone to plan!

It wasn’t a total loss, I did manage to experiment a little bit more with some digital art, which I am really enjoying:

flower girl

and I did manage to scoff lots of delicious chocolates, thanks to the generosity of the Easter bunny (and family and friends)!

On the theme of chocolatey delicious-ness, I came across the most adorable photo on Instagram and had to capture it in my sketchbook:

milkshake

However, this doesn’t make up for the fact I missed out on all my etsy April goals!

My new card designs are still just rough sketchy scribbles in my sketchbook, I only managed to collect my art prints from the printers yesterday, and finally, I’m not convinced that my new etsy photos (which took me a whole day to photograph and edit) are actually better than my current ones!

One year on etsy

My etsy shop turns one today! Happy etsy-birthday to me!

In celebration of my first year, use discount code BRturns1 for 15% off my etsy shop until 14th April!

Now that we’ve celebrated, on to an honest look at my first year on etsy…

Sales: 61

If I’m completely truthful, I was hoping for more sales in my first year. I’m really pleased to be getting a steady order per week, but at this rate, it’ll never really be a success. I’m hoping that adding art prints to my shop will increase sales next year and I’m planning on redoing my product photography in the next few weeks to freshen up the shop!

If you have any suggestions for items you’d like to see in my shop, please let me know!

shop banner 2017 3360 x 840

This sounds like quite a lot, but averages out to less than 4 of my shop items being viewed a day! I really need to work on advertising and marketing my shop. I feel like I’m constantly talking about my shop, but looking at my social media, I don’t seem to mention it very much!

Would it annoy you to see more marketing from me about my shop?

Best seller: Christmas card pack

Without a doubt, my Christmas card pack has been my top seller. I tried to get ahead of the game and started to design them in Summer, only to decide I didn’t really like them in Autumn, and then had to start from scratch (whilst moving house!). This year I’m hoping to be more organised, but no promises!

Next best seller: Otterly adorable card

After the Christmas cards, my otterly adorable card has proved most popular. I think it’s been a keen boyfriend/girlfriend favourite!

Worst seller: Cakeday cards

I love my Happy Cakeday birthday cards, but it seems I’m in a party of one! Oh well, you can’t win them all!

All in all, I’m so pleased I opened my etsy shop. I was so naive to begin with, thinking that all I would need to do is pop a few cards in the shop and then the sales would come rolling in – I was so wrong! It’s an endless process of self promotion, tweaking, creating new ideas and this is on top of the illustration, editing and artworking…

So, my first year has not quite gone as well as I had hoped, but I’ve learned a lot and now I know how much work it’ll take to build on these sales. On the bright side, 61 sales is far better than 6, so it’s a great starting point for year 2!

ps. don’t forget, use code BRturns1 for 15% my shop until 14th April!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

It’s that time again; nights are drawing in, there’s a chill in the air and mince pies are sneaking into the shops… it’s the lead up to Christmas!

So to help spread the festive cheer, I’ve added a pack of 8 Christmas cards to my etsy shop!

01-full-pack

There are a couple of traditional cards

02-traditional

A couple of cards for animal lovers

04-animals

And a few cards filled with Christmas characters embracing the festive spirit

So hopefully, with this selection, there is something for everyone. Stock is quite limited, so head on over to my etsy shop if you’d like the chance to buy!

Even more cards in my Etsy shop!

My card empire is growing! I now have a grand total of 28 card designs available in my shop!

Following on from adding my Happy Cakeday cards to my Etsy shop a few weeks ago, I have now added another 3 sets of cards to my shop!

Firstly, as it’s wedding season, I thought I had best add some of my own designs to the card choice:

IMG_1098

I’ve also added some cuddly teddy bear cards for new arrivals, either new babies or new pets :)

IMG_1142

And as previously promised, I’ve finally added my animal cards to the shop!

IMG_1093

Here’s a quick snap of a giraffe card that I sent out yesterday, along with all of its postal packaging:

IMG_1148 copy

So, this will be the last card announcement for a little while (phew!), as I’m already back to my sketchbook trying out some new designs and trying to build up the courage to add my custom name illustrations to my shop! Is it silly to be nervous of adding it in case someone actually orders one?!

So, I will leave you with the new offer I have running in my shop, you can buy 4 cards for £8.50 – go on, you know you want to! And as always, thank you so much for supporting me on this journey! I appreciate every like and share as much as any purchase!

I have some wedding cards, animal cards and new baby cards to add in the following week, so this is just the beginning! Check out all my cards here: bethanyrobyn.etsy.com

In the meantime, I’m just going to nip and paint my nails, just in case!

Where has the time gone?!

Time passes in strange ways.

It feels like it was only a few weeks ago that I was celebrating the arrival of spring and getting excited about designing a few new cards for my etsy shop. Now its over two months later, I’m sat in glorious summer sunshine, that may or may not be here to stay, and I’m still yet to print my new cards!

Life, or rather work, seems to get in the way!

time

Last week, I was in Denmark for work. It was lots of long days, laughs and walking in inappropriate shoes. After weeks of prep, it was over in a flash. I got to meet lots of lovely new people and explore a little bit of what seemed to be a beautiful and relaxed country.

IMG_0901

And so, I’m back home, lounging in the sunshine, getting ready for the next project and putting the final touches to my new cards. As a little sneak peak, here is one of my new wedding cards, soon to be stocked in my etsy shop:

congrats

As a slight aside, a HUGE thank you to those of you who have bought my cards! I don’t think Clintons have anything to worry about at the moment, but it’s so exciting every time someone chooses to send one of my cards!

Recently, my sketchbook has been filling up with little characters such as the adorable little boy with his duck below. As you probably know, I love children’s stories and animated films, so hopefully, if enough little characters appear in my sketches, I’ll be that little bit closer to creating my own story.

So in celebration of the arriving Summer, here is my Summer girl dreaming of days filled with daisy chains, adventures and ice cream. I hope the sun is shining where you are, as I’m planning on making the most of my time off in the sun and am heading out in search of a cornetto!

Drumroll please… my Etsy shop is now open!

It’s open!! It’s finally open!

I can’t believe that a dreary, drizzly Tuesday in the middle of March has ended up being the day I opened my Etsy shop!

etsy about cards

I’m so excited, you may be able to tell :)

This is the first time I’ve put my art out there for actual strangers to love or hate (here doesn’t really count!) and I hope these 12 greetings cards are just the beginning!

Without making this sound like an awards acceptance speech, I would never have opened my shop without so much lovely encouragement from quite a few people. My Mum, obvs, was as supportive as always, my friend Catherine was my number one consultant throughout the whole process and a big bunch of people on a great Etsy facebook page reminded me I wasn’t the only one struggling!

So lovely people, please have a look at www.bethanyrobyn.etsy.com and tell me what you think!

A little etsy shop update

When I decided I wanted to open an etsy shop, I really hadn’t realised quite how much work was involved!

I’ve spent the last six weeks going round and round in circles trying to get a selection of cards ready to go and finally yesterday, I think I may have pressed the order button on the first batch of shop ready designs.

Fingers crossed, I’m hoping that by the end of next week I will be able to cut the metaphorical ribbon and open my shop to the big wide world!

In between days spent looking at endless logos and print outs of previous card designs, I also managed to do a few handmade cards.

feb cards

Among others, I did a valentine’s card for my cousin to give to her fiancé, and two thank you cards and a sheepy mother’s day card for a friend. It was good to take a break from looking at the same card illustrations over and over again!

One card design that didn’t make the final cut was this one:

flower jug

My first illustrations were too pale when I tried to use them in the cards and even after re-painting this one with bolder colours, I realised it was more jug than flowers – not what I was aiming for! The new flower design is probably one of my favourite cards, so it was definitely the right choice to start again from scratch, even if it felt like another step backwards.

On another break from the cards I did some quick robin sketches.

robins

I did consider using one of these as part of my logo, but I couldn’t decide which, if any, of these was the Bethany robin – get it… Robyn/Robin… oh dear, I’m sorry, that was terrible. I still think they are pretty cute though so I might keep them in reserve in case I change my mind!

You may remember at the start of the year I shared an illustration of a girl reaching for bubbles? Inspired by the terrible weather so far this year, I drew her again but with a little friend this time.

keeping dry

Someone definitely worth sharing her umbrella with!

I hope you’re all staying warm and dry and I can’t wait to let you all know when my shop opens and see what you all think!

Plans for the future!

In the hope of convincing myself that I’m a real illustrator-in-training, recently I’ve been looking into printing some cards and possibly setting up my own little etsy shop.

There, now that I’ve told you, I’m going to have to do it!

I’ve spent the last week sketching, painting, inking, photographing and tweaking a few designs, so hopefully I’ll have 11 cards ready to go when I open up.

cake

I’d like to say it’s been seamless so far, but I won’t lie to you… the sketching and painting has been the easiest part!

Yesterday I tried to print some test cards, only for the blue and pink inks to run out 4 cards in – not ideal! It turns out that four leaf clovers look both ill and unlucky without the blue…

cards preview

Here is a little preview of said gradually-less-blue mock ups, I’d like to say the blurriness of the photo is to add intrigue, but actually I had to rush the photo before the cat could jump on them!

So today, I braved the outside world for the first time in 4 days, (does that make me sound terribly lazy?) on a voyage to speak with a local printers to see what my options are for getting a lovely professional finish.

I arrived to see that although they are indeed open Mon to Sat, just below these opening times it states ‘Closed Wednesday’. I wish I had spotted that a little sooner. What a waste of eyeliner and outside clothes!

sunglasses

So it looks like another journey into the wild for me tomorrow – I will not give up!

If any of you are unfamiliar with etsy, its a website where you can buy lots of things from artwork and knitwear to jewellery and homeware. Each seller has it’s own page, a bit like it’s own shop window.

My lovely friend Flo has an etsy page selling her bright, colourful and quirky cards and prints and she also has a Facebook page with more of her wonderful artwork which you should definitely check out!

My first purchase from etsy was an amazing Audrey Hepburn print which is on my wall along with some of my favourite paintings. It’s by an artist called Ileana Hunter, who it turns out is based near Norwich, her beautiful portrait sketches are well worth a look.

AH wall

So that’s a little update on how I’m spending my days at the moment. Elsewhere in the house, I managed to catch Midna making this face while enjoying some dreamies yesterday, I hope you have something in your life that gives you this much joy!
